What is Dow Jones Industrial Average?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tracks 30 large U.S. companies. It dates to 1896 and is weighted by share price rather than company size: a stock with a high price moves it more than a larger company with a lower price. Because it holds only 30 stocks, it is a narrower gauge than the S&P 500.
