What is Index fund?
An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that holds the stocks in a market index, such as the S&P 500, in the same proportions instead of picking among them. Its return tracks the index, minus a small fee. Many 401(k) plans use index funds as their core holdings.
