What is P/E (price-to-earnings ratio)?

The price-to-earnings ratio divides a stock's price by its profit per share over a year. A P/E of 20 means investors pay $20 for each $1 of yearly profit. A high P/E usually signals that investors expect faster growth. It is a comparison tool, most useful against the company's own history and its peers.
