What is Rule of 72?

The rule of 72 is a shortcut for estimating how long money takes to double at a fixed yearly rate of return: 72 divided by the rate gives the approximate number of years. At 6% a year, money doubles in about 12 years; at 8%, in about 9. It is an approximation, most accurate for rates around 6% to 10%.
