What is Volatility and the VIX?
Volatility describes how much and how quickly prices swing. The VIX, calculated by Cboe from S&P 500 option prices, measures the swings investors expect over the next 30 days, and it tends to rise when stocks fall. A high reading reflects uncertainty, not a prediction of direction.
