Shopify shares tumbled 8.7% on Tuesday as a narrower gross margin and a slower holiday-quarter growth outlook outweighed third-quarter earnings that topped analyst forecasts.

What did Shopify report?

Shopify (Nasdaq: SHOP) said it earned 49 cents a share in the third quarter on an adjusted basis. Analysts had expected 46 cents.

Why it matters: Revenue came in at $3.742 billion, just below the $3.747 billion consensus, the average analyst forecast. Shopify said the value of goods sold through its platform grew from a year earlier. Its operating income and net income also rose.

Why did the shares fall?

The stock tumbled 8.7% to close at $142.57. Shopify lost $16 billion in market value, the total worth of all its shares, during the session.

The pressure came from profitability and the outlook. Gross margin, the share of sales left after direct costs, narrowed to 47.6% from 48.9% a year earlier.

Shopify also forecast slower revenue growth for the fourth quarter than it posted earlier in 2026. That quarter includes the holiday shopping season.

The selling was specific to Shopify. On the same day, the Nasdaq-100 rose 0.7% and the technology sector fund gained 1.3%. Shopify accounts for 0.19% of the value of the 500 largest U.S. companies. Its drop took $17 from $100,000 spread across them by size.

Was there good news in the report?

Yes. Shopify's revenue forecast for the fourth quarter sits above the analyst estimate for that period. The company also said its free cash flow margin improved. Free cash flow is the cash left after running and investing in the business.

President Harley Finkelstein pointed to the company's work to bring shopping into AI-powered channels. The open question is whether faster sales can make up for thinner margins. The shares now sit 20.4% below their 52-week high of $179.22.

What comes next?

What’s next: The October advance retail sales report may show how much shoppers spent heading into the holidays. It is due Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m. ET. That spending flows through the online stores of Shopify's merchants.

Shopify's fourth-quarter results could show whether holiday growth landed inside the range the company forecast, and whether gross margin kept narrowing.

For readers

What it could mean for you: This story lands hardest on people who own Shopify shares directly, since a single stock carries the company's news with no other holdings to offset it. Tuesday's drop shows that beating profit forecasts may not be enough when margins shrink and growth slows. For these holders, the next test could be whether gross margin steadies and whether holiday-quarter sales match Shopify's own forecast. A margin that keeps narrowing might weigh on the shares even if revenue keeps growing.
